  5.      with and twines itself round many private virtues such as 
  6.      love of family, respectability of life, regard for religious 
  7.      beliefs, and even the assiduous if lukewarm practice of 
  8.      the established worship, which is partial to respectability 
  9.      but forbids heroism, which excels in making men steady 
  10.      but citizens mean-spirited. The men of the eighteenth 
  11.      century were both better and worse.
  12.           The French of that date loved joy and adored 
  13.      pleasure; they were perhaps more irregular in their habits 
  14.      and more unbridled in their passions and in their ideas 
  15.      than men of today; but they knew nothing of that 
  16.      judicious and well-regulated sensualism that we see
